We had two pairs of men’s dress shoes and one pair of boots that needed repairs. One of the shoes just needed gluing to reattach the trim around the sole. The other pair of shoes needed new heels. Those both were repaired. My boots however, needed a new zipper and restitching along the edges of the leather where the boot leather had pulled free from the soles. The shoe repair pro said “it wasn’t worth it” and sent my boots back without fixing them.
- Why did you repair the object?
These are all good quality shoes and worth repairing. The leather is still in good shape and the heels, and zippers should be replaceable. I'm really annoyed that the shoe repairmen couldn't be bothered to give me an estimate for my boots! They were the most expensive boots I've ever purchased and I bought them specifically because I expected to be able to replace the components as they wore out.
- What would be important to you to be included in a Repair Declaration for Ireland?
Maybe sometimes we have to learn to do it ourselves. I'm going to continue learning to repair my own possessions wherever and whenever possible.
