Meet at Kilbeggan Chocolate And Coffee Bar with walk from Lower Main Street to the Canal

Historian, writer and tour guide, Ruth Illingworth is known for her scholarship and knowledge of Westmeath. Having written extensively on many aspects of the county, Ruth’s most recent publications include the biography of the Northern Irish politician Sheelagh Murnaghan, “Sheelagh Murnaghan: Stormont’s Only Liberal MP” (2020), “A 1950s Irish Childhood” (2018) and “The Little Book of Westmeath” (2016).

Author of the ‘Little Book of Westmeath’ (2016) historian and tour guide, Ruth Illingworth provides her take on Kilbeggan’s rich industrial heritage.

From the role the River Brosna played in powering flour mills and distillery wheels, to the history of whiskey making and cooperage, to the architectural relevance of the Market Square, Main Street and Kilbeggan Canal. Ruth will take us on a journey that connects Kilbeggan’s industrial heritage with wider movements taking place across Westmeath and Ireland.

Meeting point outside of Kilbeggan Chocolate And Coffee Bar, Bridge St, Kilbeggan, Co. Westmeath. The tour will take approx 1.5 hours and is limited to 30 persons. We recommend to dress for warm and bring an umbrella.
